Some of the top names in media honed their talents under the watchful eye of Ray Morgan, whose agency later became the key building block that is Zenith. He started his career in the 1970s running Mercury Media, an embryonic media independent within Benton & Bowles. B&B tooks its staff recruitment seriously and Morgan only interviewed graduates, usually from Oxbridge. He also liked his staff to have interests outside of the workplace. Morgan-trained buyers were known as much more analytical than anyone else. Under Morgan, B&B won its own media accounts and when the time came, when B&B was set to merge with D’Arcy Masius, he left to set up Ray Morgan & Partners, with all his partners resigning on the same day and taking a number of clients with them. Morgan’s legacy is the forging of standards for media planning and buying.
